Background

Pro-Health International (PHI) is an indigenous, not-for-profit, non-governmental, and faith-based organization established in 1991.

PHI aims to deliver quality, accessible, and comprehensive healthcare and welfare services to the people of Africa and beyond, particularly the poor and less-privileged in rural, hard-to-reach communities.

PHI was founded in response to the dire health needs of Nigerians, especially those in rural areas who cannot access healthcare due to the absence of health facilities in their communities.

Other reasons are the remoteness of the nearest facility, ignorance, or poor socio-economic backgrounds.

The Pro-Health medical team comprises specialist doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, medical students, other paramedics, and non-health professionals who volunteer their time, services, and skills to provide healthcare and health education to the less privileged.

PHI thus provides a platform that emphasizes and encourages voluntary, collaborative, and resolute efforts by fellow Africans to give back to society

Coverage

Medical Interventions: Pro-Health International (PHI) conducts various medical interventions in the areas of HIV/AIDS, emerging diseases of public health concern, and short-term medical outreaches. These short-term medical outreaches, also known as medical missions or free healthcare projects (FHC), are mobile healthcare clinics conducted in strategically selected communities for periods ranging from one to two weeks at each location.

Geographical Reach: PHI has worked in the most remote islands and densely forested villages in Nigeria, building relationships and trust with government officials at all levels.

Village residents, community and religious leaders, community-based organizations (CBOs), civil society organizations (CSOs), faith-based organizations (FBOs), and other relevant stakeholders.

In Nigeria, PHI has carried out free healthcare projects in all the geo-political zones, covering more than 32 of the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

Additionally, PHI has provided free healthcare projects in Haiti and 22 African countries, including Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi and Mali.

Impact: Since its establishment 33 years ago, PHI has delivered excellent and quantitative healthcare services to over 2.5 million people across the African continent and in Haiti.
